Alpha men cropping up on TV
I'm seeing encouraging signs that Hollywood is moving past the ultra-sensitive, girlie-man shlub phase it's been stuck in much of the past two decades.
Watch every episode of "Californication." David Duchovny's character is a TRUE bad-boy ladies' man. His ball-busting charm with women truly embodies the cocky-and-funny ideal. Talk about verbal akido. He's multi-dimensional. He turns down more pussy than most guys get, yet he has one woman he really loves. And he would give up all of it for his daughter. He also laughs off any insults thrown at him.
I'd consider both male characters in "Burn Notice" very alpha because of their wry humor, efficiency and sangfroid (coolness under fire). They also show it's OK for badasses to have a soft side for loved ones.
Vick Mackey in "The Shield" is brimming with alpha charisma. He has a commanding presence, cocky humor and an ability to handle anything that comes at him. He also has a dark side, making him a fun bad boy.
Both William Shatner's and James Spader's characters in "Boston Legal" are bad boys. Spader has an edgy wit, candor and matter-of-fact frankness about sex that pulls in woman after woman.
