Default Some thoughts on setting goals

The idea behind a goal is to have a measure of progress. It's my opinion that many people set initial goals that are unattainable, or are too difficult to attain. By setting a single, difficult goal they sabotage themselves from ever progressing and eventually give up completely.

This is one reason why successful people and companies set 6 month, 1 year, 5 year, 10 year, etc, goals. You set short term goals to use as stepping stones to longer term goals, this way you will not feel overwhelmed and you will see continual progress. Also, by setting goals that are stepping stones to larger goals you avoid two phenomenon: slowing as you approach a goal and stopping at a goal as if it were the finish line.

My approach to goal setting in both my personal and professional lives has been to, as I have pointed out, set more easily attainable short term goals leading up to a more massive long term goal. To put this in the context of approaches you can look at it this way. One short term goal might be to approach one woman every day of the week for a month. That's 30 approaches, not bad for a month's work. This will lead up to the next month's goal to go for two a day, or maybe twenty a week. Don't worry about the outcome, just focus on the approach. Boost this up and go for one #close a week. Then two. Have a longer term goal of three dates a week to look forward to.

Of course only you know what pace will push you, but make sure you are not overwhelmed by your goal. Set it just high enough where there is some pressure to drive you past your comfort zone but not so much as for it to not be fun. There is nothing that says you can't improve beyond a set goal!

Most importantly, re-evaluate your goals every so often. If you are beyond your current goal and quickly approaching a longer term goal, adjust for it. If you are lagging behind your goal find out the reason why and work on it!

Finally make sure you take the time to celebrate reaching a goal. Buy that funky new shirt, take yourself out for dinner, whatever. Soon you will enjoy setting and reaching goals and hopefully it will pour over into other aspects of your life.

I totally agree what you said, stcvox. And here I add a couple of idea on how to approach goals.

For example, I want to get phone numbers from girls I found interesting on streets. This is my goal and I can work on it and keep track of it on a regualr basis. What if I keep getting results I don't want, meaning having difficulties in progressing to goals. Here I think is the solution: before approaching, think of multiple options, then choose the best choices in order. If option #1 does not work out, option #2 can immediately backup and you will not beat your head against the wall. Better yet, try each option a couple times, summarize the results and use the best option for primary, then calibrate it through implanting process. That way, you will quicky know the better way to reach a goal and will not be stuck and hit the same wall many times.
