How do you handle arguments and disagreements?

I'm curious to know what techniques you guys use to handle women in arguments. What has worked, what hasn't.

I'm especially keen to hear about things you've said that have been like throwing gasoline on a camp fire.

Isnt the best way to win an argument to avoid it in the first place?

From Secrets of the Alpha Male and the 7 Habits I have found the best way to win an argument is simply to hear out all the apparently opposing sides of the argument and then try an build on the commonalities to "steer" the conversation to where you want it.
